Five thousand people gathered to march in favor of equality in Lima, Peru.
Peruvian congressman Carlos Bruce has proposed a law that would allow same-sex couples to join in civil union and be recognized before the law as a couple. Among the benefits that the civil union will grant couples, are the right to share property, the right to make legal decisions about a partner’s health if their judgment is impaired, the right to visit in hospital and prisons, and the right to benefit from a partner’s insurance.
This bill faces a big opposition mainly from conservative parties and the Catholic Church, which has great power in Peru despite it being a secular state. However, it is supported by institutions such as the Ministry of Justice and the Public Advocate, as well as the United Nations.
La Marcha por la Igualdad (March for Equality) was organized by the collective Unión Civil Ya (Civil Union Now). The concentration started at Plaza Washington and people marched through Av. Arequipa to Plaza San Martín, in downtown Lima.
